Education Center Schools

One of three Kahnawà:ke Education Center schools, Karonhianónhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstáhkhwa is an elementary-level Kanien'kéha (Mohawk language) immersion school, with a mission to produce speakers and protect the Kanien'kehá:ka culture. The school offers Kanien'kéha immersion in all core academic subjects from nursery to grade four. Karonhianónhnha grade five and six students receive English as a secondary language, with French offered as a third language of instruction starting in grade four.

Karonhianónhnha is also home to the Kanien'kéha Owén:na Otióhkwa Curriculum Center, which develops the school's culturally based Kanien'kéha curriculum. Curriculum is defined as the skills, performances, attitudes, and values that students are expected to learn from schooling. It includes statements of desired student outcomes, descriptions of materials, and the planned sequence that will be used to help students reach the outcomes.
